Thursday, May 10 Workshop on Writing and Publishing in Anthropology JournalsThis workshop considers fears and expectations of prospective authors, editorial behind-the-scenes practices and gials, genres of writing in anthropological journals, and positive ways of dealing with critical reviews. The workshop is primarily for those with little or no publishing experience but it is open to all interested in the production of anthropological knowledge and the role of journals in disseminating it. FL Class A, 2p.m. (3 hours)Discussant: Virginia Dominguez (University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign)   Friday, May 11 Roundtable: Anthropologists and the Contemporary Academy Come discuss how funding organizations, program structures, "audit" practices, and ethical codes affect the production of anthropologists and anthropological knowledge. This session aims to spark dialogue between all who are curious about, content with, or concerned by today's academic cultures. Topics we will consider include, but are not limited to: (1) Funding - How is reliance on corporate funding for research currently affecting topics academics are addressing or the methods they are using? (2) IRBs and ethics - Who should we be held responsible to? (3) Audit cultures - What climates are being propagated within the academy as an intellectual community as a result of these practices? (4) What is the relationship between social science and policymaking, public interest activism, and radical critique? The Victory Cafe - 581 Markham St - from 8pm-midnight.   Saturday, May 12 Workshop: Funding Opportunities for Anthropologists at NSF Deborah Winslow, Cultural Anthropology Program Director in the Division of Behavioral and Cognitive Sciences at the National Science Foundation (NSF), will discuss funding opportunties for anthropologists. Topics of discussion will range from the basic funding philosophy of NSF to strategies for optimizing anthropologists' success in accessing these funds. FL Class C, 9a.m.
