Aims and Scope: American Ethnologist is a quarterly journal concerned with ethnology in the broadest sense of the term. Articles published in the American Ethnologist elucidate the connections between ethnographic specificity and theoretical originality and convey the ongoing relevance of the ethnographic imagination to the contemporary world.
Manuscript form Double-spacing is required for all materials including quotations, references cited, notes, and headings. The main text should not exceed 35 double-spaced pages. Please use 12-point font for all materials, including notes. Do not break words at the ends of typed lines. Number every page, including references and notes. Save the manuscript as a Word document.
Title page Please give title, author, institutional affiliation, and current mailing and e-mailing addresses. Give any acknowledgments at the bottom of this page. Save as a Word document.
Abstract Each article-length manuscript must begin with an abstract-a 75- to 100-word summary of the article’s scope and findings. The abstract should end with a bracketed list of up to seven index words or phrases (“keywords”). Include the abstract in the manuscript.
Text References (including references to personal communications) are placed in the body of the text, not in the notes. For each quotation or statement specific enough to need a reference, place the citation in parentheses (author’s name, year of publication of work quoted or referred to, page[s] cited) thus: (doe 1968) or (Rowe 1893:115-119).
Notes All notes follow the text as endnotes. The endnotes section begins on a new page and is restricted to material that is directly relevant to the text. Notes are numbered consecutively throughout the text by superscript numerals.
References cited The references section includes full citation of every publication cited in the text. It must begin on a new page, and all entries must be double-spaced, listed alphabetically by the same author(s). The typed layout should conform to the printed layout as follows:

Tables All tabular material should be separate from the text, in a series of tables numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals. Each table should be typed on a separate page, double-spaced, and identified by a short descriptive title centered at the top. Notes for tables appear at the bottom of each table and are marked with lowercase, superscript letters. Marginal notation in the text should approximate placement of tables. Save as a Word document or an Acrobat pdf file.
Figures All illustrative, nontabular material should be separate from the text, in a series of figures numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals. They must be submitted in a form suitable for publication. All captions should be typed on a separate single sheet (saved as a Word document), double-spaced; they need not be full sentences. Marginal notations in the text should indicate approximate placement of figures. Electronic copy: Image files should be in TIF or JPG format. They should be large enough to print at 8 x 10 in. size at a resolution of 300 dpi. Name files to key with captions. Image files may be submitted to the editorial office as email. Permissions: Use of an image belonging to anyone other than the author requires written permission from the owner. The author is responsible for securing all permissions and confirming permission granted to the editorial office in a timely manner.
Suggesting reviewers Authors may suggest up to five or six individuals (with institutional affiliations) as reviewers. The editor is not bound by these suggestions but will respect them as illustrative of potential audiences for the work.
Article submission guidelines Manuscripts submitted to AE should not be under consideration elsewhere or have been published elsewhere in any form. All manuscripts are reviewed anonymously. Please submit your manuscript online via Manuscript Central, at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/ae. A paper copy is not necessary. Image files may be uploaded at the time of submission.
